NBA 2K is a basketball video game series based on the National Basketball Association (NBA), developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports. NBA 2k23 is the 24th installment in the NBA 2K franchise and is the successor to NBA 2K22. The game was released on September 9th, 2022 for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. The NBA 2K23 Arcade Edition was released on Apple Arcade on October 18, 2022.

History

Sega acquired Visual Concepts, developers of the popular Madden NFL series, to try and create a brand new realistic sports simulation game. Under the new name Sega Sports, Visual Concepts released the football simulation NFL2K, hockey game NHL2K, and of course NBA 2K all in the year of 1999. It was released exclusively for the Dreamcast system. NBA 2K took a different approach than NBA Jam, and tried to make their game as realistic as possible. With new 3D graphics, accurate movement, and physics, NBA 2K was truly one of the first “sports simulation” games. ^[1]

Jordan Challenge

The Jordan Challenges gives users the opportunity to relive the legendary career of Micheal Jordan. There are 15 unique game experiences that allow you to play as the former NBA superstar and see if you can repeat history. This mode was Originally available in NBA 2K11 but was revived with NBA 2k23.

Seasons

Every 6 weeks NBA2K will introduce a new season consisting of new prizes each time. There are 40 levels to a season, and users can level up by playing games in the neighborhood. After the launch of a new season, everyone gets reset to level 1, and with each level earned comes a new prize unlocked for your MyPlayer.

MyTeam

Users collect player cards for current and former NBA players and form a team with the players they want. Users can get cards by purchasing different packs from the store or buying specific players from the auction house. Users can compete in challenges against the CPU or other players in the multiplayer MyTeam games too.

MyCareer

This mode is where users can start a unique career for the different MyPlayers that they created. You can pick the NBA team your player will be on, and play games against the CPU to see how their career will unfold. Users earn Virtual Currency (VC) based on their stats from the games to purchase new items and upgrades for their players.

City & Neighborhood

The city offers a place for your MyPlayer to explore and play with other users instantly. There are many different interactive shops, courts, and quests that you can find throughout the map to increase your level and purchase new items for your MyPlayer. Here is where you can take your MyPlayer to different courts around the map to play against real people in multiplayer games.

MyNBA/MyWNBA

MyNBA allows the user to explore the endless possibilities of "What if?" in NBA 2K23 from different NBA Eras. There are a total of four Eras for you to explore in total: The Magic vs Bird Era, The Jordan Era, The Kobe Era, and The Modern Era. Each of these eras has a distinct atmosphere and can transport you back in time to the courts, graphics, and commentary of that period.

MyGM & MyLEAGUE

MyGM and MyLeauge allow the user to take full control of teams. You are able to build your roster, draft classes, and change the settings for contracts, progression, trades, and more. MyLeauge allows the user to create custom leagues with current teams where you can start the season during the start of the regular season or the off-season.^[3]

Ethical Concerns

Take-Two Lawsuit

Whilst playing NBA2K22, a fan got fed up with the game almost forcing users to purchase Virtual Currency (VC), as players don't get enough as they play games. The history of video games and microtransactions is a storied one, and the NBA 2K series is yet another example of how customers can be exploited for even more money. The lawsuit was filed on January 11, 2022, and states that while 2K players can earn VC through normal gameplay, it is difficult and the amount of VC earned is often inconsistent and negligible.^[4] It is never enough to upgrade your player to a high level, and often forces players to purchase VC through microtransactions just to keep up with the competition. The packs in MyTeam mode were also mentioned as they allegedly lure players into spending more money on the unlikely event that they get their desired item. The plaintiff is seeking relief in excess of $5 million as well as the cost of legal fees as the result of the unethical use of microtransactions. ^[5]
