Hi Catherine! I enjoyed reading your data identity statement. I like how you began by introduce your name and stated your expectation. The special point is that you used the search engine in the private mode and find out Google is actually using the location information and other things to get your information. The interesting part is to go over the whole process with you. Similar to you, I also have a Chinese last name and the results the search engines give out is kind of the same as what you experienced, whereas I never thought about to search my name in incognito mode. One thought about the problem you have mentioned in the statement, you said Google still gave you almost similar result in incognito mode, I felt it is not because Google is using your other information like locations. Even if you are using the private mode, the search record in the public mode (it is called coockies) will still be counted. Thus, the result you deduced from the difference of two modes might be wrong. In all,it is a very good statement!

Hello Catherine! Your identity statement was an interesting read. The fact that you pointed out that you don't give much thought to your online presence but have dug into someone else's online information is an ironic statement that most people our age could relate to. I related to your expectations and a lot of your findings because I myself have a very common first and last name as well. Using google search led to me a TV show character from the Big Bang Theory just like how you got a Grey's Anatomy character. You used incognito mode, which is a really good idea that I haven't tried and will implement in my final identity statement. I can definitely agree with your sentiments on how your search findings are inaccurate and don't represent who you are correctly, which is interesting to think about in the context of someone meeting you in person versus seeing your online presence for the first time. Overall, interesting and good read!
