Ethical implications and concerns

However, there are some ethical implications with this app regarding privacy violation. Online privacy is one of the biggest concerns when it comes to online platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. At first, WhatsApp was known for not giving any information away, now because of the partnership with Facebook, they made it clear that under their new terms they will be sharing all personal information with Facebook and other third parties companies.

Current news

Because of the rising obstacles, the platform is now blocked in the UK. Facebook has prevented UK citizens from letting them know what data they are sharing about them and their friends beyond the chat app itself.

The legislation now has rules that include giving individuals the right to know the information an organization like WhatsApp holds about them, which includes the data obtained from them. However, currently, Facebook is not in agreement to share their information it has gathered about people via their friends and acquaintances. In response WhatsApp has signed an undertaking declaring that it will not share any user data with Facebook until the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force on 25 May of 2018. In previous years, this app was banned in Brazil, China, Turkey, Iran, and many other concerns because of similar issues.

The General Data Protection Regulation is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union. Moreover, it addresses the export of personal data outside the EU. The GDPR aims primarily to give control back to citizens and residents over their personal data and to simplify the regulatory environment for international business by unifying the regulation within the EU. It was adopted on 27 April 2016, but will become enforceable on 25 May 2018.
