With the power of the internet comes many things including the ability to keep up with friends and family, the ability to shop online, and most importantly, the ability to paint a picture. When I say picture, you might be thinking of a physical picture; however, I am speaking about your digital picture. Your digital picture is a mash-up of all the information that is available online about you, good or bad. The scary part is that the internet can paint this picture without you even knowing about it. However, you also have the ability to paint your own narrative on this canvas. Let’s explore how closely my digital picture represents my real life.

One of the ways a digital picture is painted is through data reports compiled by data brokers. I ran my name through one of these data brokers, Instant Checkmate, to find out what their painting of me looked like. Surprisingly, the painting was quite empty, except for the strokes that I left on the canvas. My full name, institutions I’ve attended, and cities I’ve lived in were all listed there.  However, all this information is what I willingly painted through my public LinkedIn account, which I want to be seen for job recruiting purposes. The social media accounts listed were for someone else with the same name as me. This makes sense though because all of my social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) are private. The fact though, that my other information such as my name and LinkedIn were associated with this other person’s social media, is a bit concerning. It shows that even though my social medias are private because I do not want them to be seen publicly, the internet is still painting their picture of my social medias. If for example, this other person had inappropriate things on their social media, and someone was doing a background report on me, this would pose an issue.

=== <big>'''Google Search Painting'''</big> ===

Searching Google with my full name brings up a plethora of links to information about a seemingly renowned Orthopedic Surgeon from New Jersey, Meelan N. Patel. However, at the very bottom of the first page is my LinkedIn. In terms of images, most were of this surgeon; however, I also found images that I posted on my public portfolio website. If I add my hometown to the search, my portfolio, LinkedIn, a couple of articles announcing honor roll from a community college I dual enrolled at, and a digital version of my senior yearbook show up. When I added various social media websites I use, I could not find my accounts. [[File:mp_portfolio.png|400px|thumb|right|my portfolio page]]

From my LinkedIn, someone could come away with the impression that I am a hardworking student that is looking to further his career in Computer Science. My portfolio, though, is a picture that I painted with a bit more personal touch not achievable through business heavy LinkedIn. On there, I have a big header background of me looking out to the sea. I give off the impression that I’m into photography or into traveling. Furthermore, I even give a description of myself on my portfolio, stating that I love to watch sports, play video games, and learn new things; all things not accessible through a data broker but play a big role in painting an accurate self-portrait on the internet.

=== <big>'''Analysis'''</big> ===

It seems that in terms of my data broker report there is not any information out there that I did not provide myself through LinkedIn. Though I was a bit surprised that my social medias did not show up even though they are on private. In terms of Google search, the only stuff I did not add myself were the articles of academic achievement and my high school yearbook, things that I’m not ashamed of having out there and also paint a good picture of me. It seems that I have done a good job owning the canvas of my digital picture with the combination of my LinkedIn and my portfolio page. My LinkedIn show cases my student and worker side while my portfolio page explains a little more about my personality. Thus, I think for the most part, my digital picture does an accurate job of depicting my real life due to my active approach to painting the picture.
