Rumble Fighter[2] is a free-to-play, fighting, MMORPG game where players choose between different job classes and equip special Sacred Scrolls and ExoCores that allow them to have both a unique fighting style and additional fighting transformations within the game. Players can choose to play against one another in a free-for-all or in teams on a variety of different maps and modes. Rumble Fighter also uses a basic level system which can be earned by playing a variety of Game Modes.

Within the game there exists many opportunities to interact with other players such as the plaza, joining a public room, Facebook events, and simply playing the game with others you meet. The formation of guilds also allow players within a team to compete competitively against another team to see which team ranks the highest in the end.

Rumble Fighter’s user interface consists of a menu, lobby, info page, and store that users will mainly interact with when playing the game. Controls in Rumble Fighter are also very basic using keyboard keys that can be customized.

History

Rumble Fighter was developed by Nimonix and WeMade Entertainment but has gone through multiple publishers throughout its history. Back in 2007, OGPlanet was the first publisher to work with the developers and later worked together to release Rumble Fighter after seeing positive feedback from testers. The game flourished for its first initial years as many players were drawn to the game. However, hackers began exploiting the game discouraging WeMade Entertainment from continuing development alongside Nimonix.

In 2014, Rumble Fighter announced it would be moving to GamesCampus as Nimonix and OGPlanet were unable to reach an agreement to continue service. Once the contract was terminated, Nimonix decided to set a 30 item limit to the allow transfer of items, which outraged many players. As a result, there was a significant drop in the number of players who actually transferred over to GamesCampus.

GamesCampus did find much success either with Rumble Fighter as another company later took over GamesCampus and decided to end Rumble Fighter’s service after seeing such a decline in its player base. As a way to express his love and support for the game, former GamesCampus CEO David Son decided to make a new startup company called RedFox Games that would later adopt Rumble Fighter and provided full account transfers to current players.

In 2016, Rumble Fighter was released on Steam and has been there ever since.

Scrolls and Exocores

Scrolls
Exocores

Sacred Scrolls determine your fighting style and overall movement within Rumble Fighter. Each Sacred Scroll is unique and draws from many traditional fighting styles as well as fantasy fighting styles. Exocores allow players to transform and gain new abilities depending on the class you use. Many Exocores are shared within all classes, but there are some Exocores exclusive only within a particular class.

EXP and Carats

Players in Rumble Fighter gain experience points (EXP) and level up the more they play. Each level is separated based on total EXP accumulated throughout the game and give players access to more game modes, systems, and items as they level up. Carats are the in-game currency used in Rumble Fighter to purchase items in the Shop to customize their characters. Carats are earned by playing the game within any mode, game events, and also by selling owned items. There is also an alternative cash currency called Astros that is obtainable by purchasing with real money that allows you to purchase the same items but by spending real money instead.

Game Modes

Rumble fighter has a variety of different game modes that players can choose from while playing the game. Each mode has its own set of maps that players battle on either single-player or multi-player, both with and against other players.

  • Battle Mode: For players who enjoy free-for-all battles. The objective is to defeat everyone else on the map and to be the last one standing.
  • Rumble Mode: There are five different Rumble Modes that each have their own objectives.
    • King of the Hill: Players fight one another to control a certain area of the map. Whoever controls this area the longest will win King of the Hill.
    • Moving Screen: Players begin at ground level of the map while fighting one another. At the same time, the map will begin moving upwards and players will have to avoid falling off of the map while dealing with other players with the same goal.
    • Caged Beast: Players play in teams fighting opponents one-on-one as the rest of their teammates await in cages. Each cage will open one at a time when the current player on their team fighting is defeated. The next player will have to fight the same opponent until they are defeated. This continues until all players on one team is defeated.
    • Potion Battle: Players battle to drink their way to victory as each player runs around the map finding potions scattered around. The player that drinks the most potions within a certain time limit is the winner.
    • Arena: Players are thrown into a small arena map where each team has to try and acquire the most kills as possible. Once a kill count of 12 is reached for their team, that team wins.
  • Adventure Mode: For players who enjoy playing alongside other players against game bosses. Players must fight through waves of monsters before reaching the boss.

Ethical Concerns

Trading System (Scamming)

Trade scamming[3] is when one player takes advantage of another player’s trust or ignorance inside the game and steals from that player via in-game means. The player committing this act is called the scammer and the scammer achieves this usually by promising the victim a certain item in return for another item. Once the scammer receives the item they wanted from the victim, the scammer breaks the agreement by not returning the gift as promised and will block the victim from all forms of communication. As a result, the victim is left emotionally damaged and loses currency within the game, either in-game currency or real-life money. This is not rare in Rumble Fighter as there is a lack of a trading system within the game. The impact left on the victim can be quite severe as Rumble Fighter does not take responsibility for any scams that occur within the game and will thus not help the victim of a scam. The victim is left with no option but to move on and hopefully learn from their mistake. Rumble Fighter states that the support team will not compensate victims of scam incidents nor will take action on the scammer no matter how vile the scam may be. Scamming is very common in Rumble Fighter, as it is in other games. Multiple players in Rumble Fighter resort to scamming to try and trick new or ignorant players into giving them items they otherwise would have to pay for themselves. Scammer will usually falsely offer an item of equal or higher worth in return so that the offer seems more enticing to the victim. This is a result of both malicious intent as well as placing too much trust in strangers online.

Hacking

Hacking in Rumble Fighter occurs when one player is able to gain access to another player’s account. Once the hacker logs in, they sell all of the other player’s items and will use the currency gained from the sold items in order to gift multiple items to back for themselves. The most common way for hackers in Rumble Fighter to gain access to such accounts is usually by taking advantage of the other player’s trust. The hacker will usually promise something in exchange for the other player’s account information such as free items or in-game currency. Again, this leaves emotional damage on the user as the Rumble Fighter support team does not take responsibility for such actions and will not do much to help support the victim causing many players to quit playing the game. Rumble Fighter has only continued to address not giving personal information to strangers online.

Flaming

Flaming occurs in Rumble Fighter as in any other online video game. Flaming is a form of cyberbullying that intentionally acts on writing hateful comments to another online user. Within Rumble Fighter, flaming is very common as many players sometimes become frustrated with their teammates and will resort to degrading them based on their in-game performance. Currently, the result of flaming in Rumble Fighter is usually chat restriction/limitation where a player is restricted or limited from using the chat feature in the game. This sort of toxic behavior online inflicts emotional pain to end-users who are undeservingly harassed, which can affects their mentality within the game and sometimes even outside of the game. As an online video game, Rumble Fighter gives users a sense of psychological freedom to act aggressive and threaten other users without any serious repercussions on themselves.

Pay-to-win

Players in Rumble Fighter can purchase items in the shop in order to boost the strength of their character. However, these items are quite expensive and will take many hours to buy just one item within the game. As an incentive to not have to spend so much time to acquire such powerful items, Rumble Fighter also allows players to purchase the same items with real-world money called Astros. This often divides the population into players who spend a lot of money on the game and those who don’t. As a result, paying players being extremely more powerful within the game than those not willing to spend money to the point where the game is no longer enjoyable for “weak” players since they cannot compete on the same level. The has coined Rumble Fighter as a “pay-to-win”[4] video game which is pretty common within MMORPG games. Shops within MMORPG games usually do not compensate for the lack of money spent or balance such factors so it highly encourages players to spend real money on the "free" game in order to have a better experience.
