The use of avatars in videogames enables players to create stronger and more complex connections within the games. Avatars make the experience more immersive by providing a system in which players can put themselves into the game and interact with the game in a more expressive and personal manner. [1] Emerging research has begun to illuminate that when we avatars in a sandbox environment, it’s often about building a better version of ourselves, rather than experiencing something that is completely outside of real life. [2] This research shows that an individual will make assumptions about their avatar based on identity cues such as the avatar’s appearance, and will then modify their behavior or attitudes to align with the expected behavior believed to be associated with these observed attributes or characteristics. [3] Through manipulation of their avatars, players can assume different roles and create new identities. This can ultimately help players discover who they are on a deeper and more tangible level. [4]
