There are four of them, three men in tight trousers and a woman. The light is soft and low, the atmosphere intense. Suddenly finger snapping breaks the silence, then stomping and strumming on a guitar. The woman, in a frilly shirt and neat skirt that falls to her ankles in abundant ruffles, gets up. Her hair is pulled back into a neat bun (like mine, I hope) with flowers and barrettes. She’s sporting smouldering red lipstick but doesn’t smile (note to self), serious and focused. One señor starts singing; his eyes closed as if to truly feel the beauty of the song. The señora stomps around like a housewife in a huff, whipping her ruffles from side to side, her fingers curling artfully around themselves. How does she make it look so effortless? Then it’s over and OMG it’s my turn. Apart from my partner no one here knows! The professional dancers ask if anyone will have a go and of course as birthday girl, I am cheered on to the stage. | |
