Emma Muth's Review of Ponette Rubio's Data Identity Statement

Hi Ponette! As someone in the opposite situation with a common first name, it was particularly interesting to read your experience with this assignment. (I'm especially envious of your uniqname!) I liked that you used questions often; I feel that increased my curiosity about reading your findings and analysis. In particular, the concluding question about whether “online Ponette” would approve of you demonstrated a thoughtful inquiry about the contrast between your online presence and offline self. I think expanding on this question a little more (differences between work Ponette and personal Ponette or what specific aspects of your presence work Ponette would be proud of) could be helpful in strengthening the analysis of your discoveries. Wording like “I began to wonder” made me feel like I was going through the search with you, which I also enjoyed. However, some of the phrasing (such as “made me become suspicious” or “I knew I have been”) felt a little confusing or overcomplicated, and I think that changing these to active voice, simpler constructions, and consistent tenses throughout could help the flow of the essay. I particularly loved your point about how withholding information is an information statement in and of itself; that is a compelling line that I personally really hope you keep in your final draft. There were a couple of lines where I found myself wishing you’d go into a little more detail; for example, I felt like the phrase “people reached out to me,” lacked context— even something like “reached out to see how I was doing since I hadn’t been active” or something else that offers a little more explanation could be helpful. Overall, I loved how you structured this assignment and I thought you expressed strong, interesting, and thought-provoking conclusions. Even as we’re talking about online vulnerability, I’m so sorry to hear about the period of hardship your family went through, and thank you for being transparent in sharing a little bit about that. I appreciated your writing and I’m excited to see what you do for the final draft!
