Talk:Discord

Length

From what I gathered, the length of your article is 3034 words, give or take a little given the references, which is in the realms of the word limit, so that’s good.

Structure

You have a good opening paragraph that concisely summarizes what Discord is and some general statistics about the app in both the paragraph and the software info box. I also like that you explain what a server is and details how it is formatted and used for people who might not be familiar with Discord.

In line with that, the strongest section in your article is the one depicting Features on Discord. The historical details on different functions is also good, though you might consider putting them in a separate section if there are too many updates, in a timeline sort of format to talk about what Discord started with and what new features it has now. Since you also mentioned memberships and the additional perks that come with both Classic and Nitro, perhaps a comparison between the two (and also vanilla Discord) would be useful? Without prior knowledge of Discord, it’s a little hard to put into scale what 100MB of uploading power means, for example. Inserting a Nitro badge to illustrate your point could also be an option, since you talked about that. (Also, you might want to clarify what currency you’re referring to with the prices! This is an internal site but on Wiki not everyone's going to be from the US)

I looked through some of your sources and while I think some of the concepts you mentioned seem pretty common sense, for this assignment it is best to find sources that are more reliable (I think Professor Pasquetto said peer reviewed articles and pieces from major news organizations). A lot of your references seem to be from blog sites, and unfortunately I’m not sure if those qualify as reliable or from big name news sources, especially in your usage section. There are some scholarly articles that talk about Discord as a rising platform for school and businesses during the pandemic that you could use as alternatives. You can also cite Discord and the new student hub thing they’re doing.

Clarity

You presented a variety of ethical issues and provided examples to these issues, and it’s very clear how these issues could arise from the platform. You mentioned that “anonymity has been considered one the constructs that differentiate traditional bullying from cyberbullying”, maybe you can expand on this point a little to put in perspective why cyberbullying, or even specifically cyberbullying/ other cybercrimes is that much bigger of an ethical issues (like how it’s hard to track people online), and what Discord is doing to mitigate these issues (looking through here might be a good starting point).

Objective reporting (Neutral point of view)

With your History and Usage section, while I know the adjectives you are using are from other sources, you might want to paraphrase or directly quote them so that it is more clear that these are not your opinions. For example, “since childhood, founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy both shared a love of video games, cherishing the friendships and connections that formed while playing them” could be rephrased as “Founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy cite the connections they formed during childhood playing video games as the inspiration for creating Discord.” Similarly, be careful when you’re describing events and sizes. Using terms like “powerhouse” makes it seem like you are endorsing them, unless you make it clear that you’re quoting someone else on the matter, though if you’re just talking about its dominance, you can probably just say “Discord is the biggest platform for [whatever purpose]” or something along those lines. It’s probably best if you remove most adjectives in general, like “... the ability to collaborate in perfect time with no awkward delays or lag issues…” in the Work Environment section, because right now it sounds a little like an advertisement.

The section on NSFW content on Discord is insightful, but I think it’s also important to point out that not everyone uses the NSFW function just for sexual exploitation/ harassment. Some people also use it just for entertainment or as an alternative platform to perform sex work. Adding mentions of these content will make reporting on the issue more neutral.
